The term Freeware is copyrighted software, which is made available for use free (hence the name), for an unlimited time and no functionality is removed. Authors of Freeware often want to “give something to the community”, but also want credit for their software and to retain control of its future development.
The term Shareware refers to commercial software which is copyright, but which may be used for a trial period or have a lower functionality over the paid commercial version. Shareware is often used to entice people into paying for a product if at first they were not sure they should buy it.
