Sure, if you're doing photo or video editing, that's a good reason to get a bigger display as the more screen real estate the better. However, with the inclusion of virtual desktops in most OS's now, we can multitask to our hearts' content and still be organised. Spaces in Leopard has been a lifesaver for me, and negates the need for an external display for my MacBook. I would say it depends entirely on what you’re using your computer for.
